View Full Version : Looking for a Snail that Doesn't Multiply

I currently have a 50 gallon fish tank with the following inhabitants:

12 neon tetras
8 lambchop rasboras
4 peppered corys
2 powder blue dwarf gouramis
2 honey sunset gouramis
2 cherry barbs

I want to have a couple of snails in the tank (I have plastic plants) but I definitely don't want something that will multiply like crazy. Any suggestions of what kind of snails I should get that would also be safe with my current residents?

Nerite snails can live in freshwater & are supposed to be good at algae eating. They can't reproduce in fresh only salt so no problem. There are 2 kinds, olive & zebra.

Mystery/apple snails (pomacea bridgesii) are sex specific and require a partner to reproduce. They also lay their eggs in a clutch above the water line so its easy to remove them. They would be my recommendation. Nerites are very proficient algae eaters, but lay their eggs under the water, and since they need brackish to hatch, you would need to remove them.

I was interested in nerites because they are supposed to be so good at algae eating. I want to keep my tank glass clean. Are brigs really good at that too?

nerites will lay eggs over the tank no snail is going to keep 100% algae away.

you can go with nerite because the eggs will only hatch in brackish conditions

yea but then your stuck with a tank full of eggs that will never hatch.... brigs if they do lay it will be above the water and its a easy fix to take them off.

If anything the barbs and cories will probably eat the eggs either way.
Brigs for looks and the daredevil personality
Nerite for algae busting.

Apple snails are my Vote. I love mine. They are fun to play with. I have a vid that i will post soon of one crawling all over my hand. It was eating what ever it could find on my hand. Good times.

There are many more kinds of neritids.
Olives are native US species. Vitta usnea
Zebra are S.Africian Neritina natalensis

Others that can be found are:
Virgin nerites from Mexico to Brazil. Vitta virginea
Abalone snail from around carribian(I think) Septaria spp.
Spiky snail from Philippines. Clithion corona
Diamond Snail from Borneo. Vittina spp.
Polkadot Snail from Indonesia also Vittina spp.
European nerites theodoux spp(I'm sure I misspelled this one)

And others that I have never gotten my paws on.
