I have found a reliable source for mangrove wood. I can get a wide range of sizes at affordable prices. It will be a couple weeks to get it in, but when I do the prices should be about:
medium (12") $12
large (18") $24
XL (22") $45
Show (30") $95
Super Show (50" - 72") $400
Mangrove positives:
- beautiful, vertical branchy look with lots of holes is a network pattern
- some pieces are sprays of smooth branched extending out from a central point
- no tannins (I am told, but I have not had the chance to test it yet)
negatives:
- only about 1/2 the pieces sink without soaking, but they will sink after a couple weeks in water, or can be weighted down.
I have also FINALLY gotten a better shipping rate with UPS, and the savings on shipping has been 20-30%. That means that a 30 pound package that was costing $25 to ship is now averaging $18. I few people in DesMoines went in on an order together and got a great rate of $25 on a 60 pound oversize box. Group ordering is the way to go. If you have a commerical address it can be shipped to the rates are lower still.
