FO- fish only
FOWLR-fish only using live rock for biological filtration
Reef-same as above but includes corals, variety of inverts, etc.

The newbie link in my signature includes a shopping list but you might want to tell everyone what you want most in the tank. There are many different things you can do in a 40g and we might as well base answers on what your dream is for the tank.

A good choice for a 40, but then again I'm a fan of reefs. There are lots of equipment suggestions for tanks in the newbie shopping link I mentioned above. Next step now that you know it is a reef is to decide if you want to be able to support anything (meaning more money), or the more budget concious soft coral and invert options that won't demand so much light. After that have you started to look at fish and if so which ones are you drawn towards?

Gobies make great first fish. They tend to have personality as well as being generally peaceful which is important in a first fish.

Be easier for you to ask about a specific Goby as gobies are one of the largest families of fish in the ocean.

The gobies form the family Gobiidae, which is one of the largest families of fish, with more than 2,000 species in more than 200 genera.
