this is my very first post here or anywhere!

hello everyone,

this past summer i got my three year old daughter a 10 gallon starter tank and put in two goldfish (one is fan tail). they did mostly fine but after a few months, and learning more about taking care of tanks i realized that they needed much more room (they are about three inches each).

two weeks ago, we got a beautiful new 20 gallon tank and they've adapted wonderfully.

i promised my daughter (lily, of course) that we could get another fish. today, i took her to a petsmart in manhattan, where we live, and she fell in love with a small male betta. i told her she couldn't put that in the tank, when i was corrected by the salesperson and then seconded by another. in fact, i could put the small beta (2 inches, now named ariel) with old dorothy and flounder.

my tank has always been a bit warmer because our apartment is warm, and i understood i'd have to feel different food, so we brought home the little guy and put it in the tank. so far he's pretty much hiding behind the filter and staying near the top of the tank, but certainly venturing out. as for the goldfish, a little bit of curiosity and a few half-hearted nips is all i've seen.

however, i went to the internet and read that i'd made a terrible mistake -- that someone is likely to kill someone. i really do not want that to happen -- for the fish and for my little girl who is jumping for joy. if that is the case then i feel like the fish store really steered me wrong.

so my question is: do i need to take this betta out of the tank? can a smaller male betta coexist with two goldfish?

thanks for any help!

Unfortunately, you are far from the first member who has bought fish, then done research only to find out that the supposed "knowledgeable people at the fish store" have next to no idea what they're talking about. You're right that goldfish and bettas shouldn't really co-exist - for several reasons. Goldfish are temperate species that do best at water temps of 60-70* - room temperature. Bettas are tropical fish that should really be in water closer to 80*. The other problem is that, while its great that you upgraded, even that 20gal will most likely be too small for the goldfish in the long-term. Is it possible to put the betta in the old 10gal? It would do well with a group of white cloud minnows or black neons for a nice community, as long as you have a filter and heater.

welcome to AC. Try posting in general freshwater or general coldwater to get more info. I agree with setting up the 10g for the betta if possible. Good luck!

thanks for the great idea, but i gave the tank away ... will have to figure something else out. it is very aggravating to feel so led astray and hate to disappoint my daughter. thanks again. appreciate the quick reply.

i did try to post in general freshwater but it was deleted as a duplicate post ... could you please tell me how to repost in a new thread (i'm not only a newbie with fish but with posts, sorry)

welcome to AC !

I think you have your answer on the betta & goldfish; they can't go together, so the easiest fix would be to set up a 5 gallon tank for the betta, or to re home the goldfish.

Just start a new thread, maybe include a link to this one instead of copying it's text entirely...

Also - mountain minnows are a cold water species - would be better GF mates than betta mates.

Lots of people keep Bettas in 2-5G Eclipse Explorer type tanks (pretty cheap, generally available at Wal-Mart & other stores, they include a cartridge filter that's more or less adequate for a single betta). Add a mini heater and you're good... or at least better than having a betta getting abused by GF.
