Hey Guys!

Whist at my LFS I saw a tank of shrimp which they never ever get in! So in my delight (and quite possibly foolishness) I got 4. They reasoning was that if they were inexpensive so it wasn't a great loss if they got eaten. So one week on I still have 4 shrimp not eaten, infact my fish aren't even bothered by them. So can anyone tell me what kind I have and if they have any special requirements? They get fed Hikari crab cuisine and I'm looking into gettin them their own tank and some buddies.

Amano from the looks of it.

They look like Amano shrimp to me. They'll eat just about any food. Water conditions need to be good, 0 ammonia and nitrite, <20 nitrate. The larvae can only grow up in saltwater so you won't be getting any babies from breeding.

In nature the Amano shrimp young are hatched in freshwater streams and rivers. They get swept to estuaries which are brackish to full saltwater. That is where they mature to adult shrimp. Once the young have gone through all of their larval stages they swim back up stream to freshwater. Adult Amano shrimp don't like salt water.

FYI, it takes serious dedication to breed Amano shrimp in captivity, which palacan has done!

Hey pixl8r, long time no see! I actually still do the amano breeding. At the moment, I'm just waiting for latest batch to grow big enough to take in to the stores before I start in on the next one. I managed to get about 10 more females in the shrimp I kept from my first successful attempt at raising these guys, so there is never a lack of shrimp eggs in my tank.

I'm still hoping for some positive results with either the bamboo or vampires breeding this year.

Sorry for the thread hijack! But... palacan, any luck breeding your filter feeders?
