I am planning to get 4-6 baby discus soon, and I have a few questions. I am planning to have 2 20g long tanks setup and their will be 3 in each. the tanks will be simple. bare bottom, large sponge filter, some 3-4" PVC tubes, and maybe a piece of wood.

I will be doing a 3-6g WC every day, and removing uneaten food after each feeding (it will be in tank for about 10-15min before I remove it). I will be feeding one group of discus only frozen and live foods and the other only flake food or pellet food (whichever is better, any ideas for either would be nice!) and will compare growth rates.

I eventually plan to get a 55g or so tank to house all of the discus, and will make that into a showtank with plants, ect.

they are going to be part of a school experiment, so after the experiment is over (1.5-2 months) Ill be switching to feeding only frozen and live foods to all of them!

does this sound alright? is it okay to cycle the tank by using 2 pieces of raw krill in each? I am looking for somewhere that has them for a cheap price, as in about20-35 bucks for a single 1.5-2" baby.

Please see my blog for proper fishless cycling (not raw krill).

Why not wait to see which is better and then decide what to feed them permanently?

I HIGHLY suggest New Life Spectrum to the prepared only group. I would feed it exclusively, this si how you get the best results with it. Check out my blog and Photobucket page for my results with it.

The most growth does not necessarily mean it is the healthiest food. You can pump lots of protein in them and they will grow, but will they have the best health, proportions, colors, etc.? Not necessarily.

Tell me where you are located and maybe I can suggest a place to get some young discus. How many feedings are you planning on doing a day? I would suggest 4-6 times for that size juvie. Hope you can post your experiment results here too. I can't help you with using krill to cycle the tank, I have never done that but I know it's been done successfully by others with a raw shrimp.

interesting experiment. which ever prepared food you choose(new spectrum is not available in some areas, i've been l;ooking for it just to check it out) keep it consitent you will need a control really.
I would not suggest feeding exclusively frozen and live food to them tho. (once you are done with the experiment.)

Discus are opportunitic feeders and are foragers.

their diet will vary and they will pick at algae tabs used to feed pleco's. live and frozen foods may not provide them with all they need.(\you do have to be careful with some live foods as it may carry pathogens.

you should be able to cycle using krill tho I am not sure why you are chossing this method. once the krill die they will be providing ammonia.

thanks! I was looking on aquabid and found some good deals! I am located in NYC.

Just be careful who you buy from so you don't start out with sick fish or culls.

would 4 be better? I have been looking around aquabid and have found some amazing colored babies, I am planning to get a group of 6. has anyone one here ever purchased from a particular seller on their? I dont much care about particular color.

PM me which sellers you're considering, I'll give you honest feedback on them. I'm familiar with almost all of them. There are some good and some not good. And yes, four in a tank is a better number, less picking on each other. When you have 3, two usually pick on one and that one will probably be very stressed.

I dont think my parents will go for the 4 in each tank. Ill ask my dad when he gets home tho. thanks! will PM ASAP!
