I am getting a 29-40 gallon tank soon and would love to keep cichlids. The only problem is that I don't want to worry about breeding. I like rainbow cichlids, angelfish, convicts, and firemouths. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for the help.

cons breed like rabbits! angels need 10 gallons per fish so you could have 2-3 in a 40 gallon and get agressive when they start to mate. My firemouths were agressive to everything in my tank. They were great when I removed them from the tank and put them in there own tank. Rainbow cichlids are good beginner cichlids and breeds very easily, laying a large number of eggs.
Well the problem with fish like convicts, and firemouths is that they always want to breed and they will breed with anything. If you're really worried about them breeding I would suggest buying adult fish and sexing them before you buy them.

I would set up a 29 or 30 gallon for a colony of neolamp. multi. or a pair of julidochromis species. They breed VERY easily. Honestly, a week after I acclimated them to my tank I had fry from both!

I'm sorry, when I said I don't want to worry about breeding, I meant that I don't want them to breed.

If the breeding is out of the question, then you will need to go with only one of the fish you list and then get some upper dithers and a bottom crew of fish not known to breed easily in captivity.

I'm going to assume a 36" tank here... A rainbow with a honduran red point would work out well, I think. You could also think about a spinosissimus, but they're REALLY mild, and if the other fish is a little aggressive, it's not going to be happy. If you had a tall tank, maybe you could add an angel, but I really don't know how well it would get along in that company (except that the spino would probably be fine). I'd also advise steering clear of convict, and firemouth can be pretty aggressive if they're the dominant fish.

I agree. No breeding really limits your choices unless you only want to go with one cichlid.
You could go with an angel, some tetras, and then a troup of corys?
