29g planted tank just came through the plague with only one val and one amazon sword left standing. 2.5 wpg lighting with eco-substrate covered with course pebbl-y substrate, utilizing root tabs for fertilizer. DIY CO2 diffuser at with a concentration of about 15ppm.

The val is slowly dying... the leaves are now wrinked at the edges and it seems to be wasting away. Is there some deficiency that could account for this kind of symptom? The sword is flourishing, though it too has a slight degree of leaf wrinkling. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks!

I had an outbreak of hair algae that sprung up and demolished the tank before I could bring it into reason. The tank is about 9 months old and prior to the outbreak, the val was doing splendidly. Now it is just wasting away... I don't get it.

Are you dosing Excel? If so that could cause it to melt if given enough of it. If not i would just wait to see wht happens.

How did you get rid of the hair algae? Did you just pull it out or did you use some type of algaecide.

On a side note: if you have eco complete you really dont need the root tabs.

I was dosing excel to get rid of the the various algaes. I have not dosed in a week...
I started using root tabs because it seems like my plants need something that they aren't getting. The sword has a little bit of this wrinkled leaf thing happening and the older leaves have browning tips...

Folks:

I doubt that the problem is the Excel unless dosed in quantities greater than the manufacturer's recommendations.

I dose liquid fertilizers three times per week: One dosing is
a solution of Flourish, Excel and Seachem Iron
Excel and
Flourish.
