I have a Green Terror in a 55 with some dithers (all will go the LFS once the space starts to get cramped). I've read that GT's and jack dempseys grow kind of slow. Would a JD be okay in there for a year at least? Maybe with some small dithers like tiger barbs?

I think your GT. if it is the only large fish in there and the tank is properly filtered and maintained, will be fine for life in a 55.

I don't have experience with mixing SA cichlids so not sure if you can have any other similar tankmates...I would be surprised if you couldn't have a school of tiger barbs say 8 or so though, subject to the GT eating them depending on size.

 Your chances for success will be better if they are both juviniles & introduced to the space at the same time. Once they mature, it's a toss up cause just like people, some folks just don't get along. The dithers will help break up the focus. Large rocks or driftwood will help in sort of dividing the tank. Give it a shot. Good luck, "T"

I would put one in but do it soon and close to the same size.

durn I totally missed that you were asking about putting a JD in there. I think from what I read, as the fellows have already said, you can try this but get them in together as young as possible.

You could try it but may have to upgrade their tank when they get bigger and territory becomes more of an issue.
