So if any of you have tried to buy a Salifert Magnesium Test kit online here recently you will notice that NOBODY has them. Foster and Smith has put them on backorder twice at least. They were supposed to come off of backorder yesterday, but that backorder status has now been changed to 3/15.

My local stores can't get them from their suppliers at all, as they are out. In my travels I have checked other pet stores around me in about a 150 mile radius and they are all out or don't stock them.

I haven't read good reviews about the SeaChem test kit but I found this one Marine Depot. Elos is the brand name.. Anyone have experience with this kit?? At this point I need a kit. I can't just hope that my tank is doing ok and survive on increased water changes. I'm going through way to much salt and at 75 bucks a bucket locally or 50 bucks shipped I would rather have the test kit.

Yes, I have. Elos is a superior product to Salifert. I pretty much use it exclusively, especially after Salifert's alkalinity kits have been inconsistent. Also, Elos is the only kit to be NIST certified, so at least you have something to go from and you know it is reasonably accurate. Although I get it for a drastically reduced price, I still feel the extra cost is worth the peace of mind. Try them out. I think you will like them.

Thank you for the feedback. It is ordered :D
So for the layman can you explain NIST certified? I'm not sure what that means, sounds official like my BICSI Certification, but can you put it into perspective for me?

I was wondering the same thing. I tried to order the salifert alk and mag tests from marine depot and they emailed me asking for approval to substitute for the elos alk and mag kits. I figured they wouldn't want to go for a lesser product, but a higher product for more money. Their response is that theyy have reached out to Salifert many times with no response.

Good to hear that my instinct was right since I approved the switchout to both a few days ago.
