i have a penguin 200, i'm guesing some things are getting loose because the impeller makes too much noise for me. i have it on mi 26 gallon fs tank which is in my room and the noise makes it hard for me to sleep. i'm thinking of getting a
canister filter, can any of you suggest one? i dont have that much money, so i also need it to be rather cheap.

what do you think of the Rena Xp1's?

I really like my xp2...and for HOB's I prefer the AquaClear filters. I too would suggest taking off the intake and pulling out the impellar to make sure there isn't debris lodged in there before you purchase a new filter.

I have a Penguin 200, perfectly quiet, and should stay that way as long as you follow the maintenance schedule. I also have a XP3 that is awesome...got it for $99.95 at Ken's Fish. You can get a XP1 there for $67.95, though I think you should go with the XP2 for $78.95.

I have the Rena XP series but the newer stainless steel marineland C series are also very nice and about the same price if you shop around enough. Both are very quiet for me except when the intakes get plugged up. Right now I am running one of them with a cover to protect my fry from being sucked up. If I don't get to it soon enough it starts cavitating and makes a rattling noise. As soon as the inlet cover is cleaned off, the noise stops.
