I'm in the process of doing a fishless cycle on my RCS tank, see sig for plant list. Would it hurt or help to raise the temp of the tank while doing the fishless cycle? Currently, I have it running at about 78˚.
Here's the tank...

I would leave it as is. Higher temps will mean faster growth, but I don't think you will see much difference once you are already at 78F. If you were much below 70F then I would say raise it.

Very, very nice tank!

IMHO increasing the temperature to 82˚ would be beneficial.

creoguy: A couple of other items.
[1] If you can grow and cause CRS to propagate I would appreciate some tips as I have been unsuccessful in this endeavor.
[2] I hope that you have plenty light in order to support the red pigmented plants.

This is my first planted tank. I have the stock 15 watt fluorescents on the tank so that will keep me limited to the low light plants. The Red Crypto is already starting to melt but I expected this to happen. The Green Crypto is doing ok still though.
jones57742, the tank will be a Red Cherry Shrimp not Crystal Red Shrimp tank. I'd love to have some but they're a bit on the pricey side for me. Especially since this will also be my first invertebrate tank!

I am sure that you know this but if the green pigment does not come out in the red pigmented plants very soon the plants will die and removal is appropriate.

Please excuse me. Old age is "you know what". Also I had to reread your first post several times to confirm my incorrect moniker.

BTW: does creoguy imply Cajun?

Thanks for the tips on the Crypt! I was planing on just trimming off any that are melting close to the rhizome. Not quite sure what you mean about "if the green pigment does not come out of the red".
As for the screen name... long story short, couldn't think of a cool email address years ago and at the time was working on some CREO equipment, hence creoguy! :grinyes: As for all the acronyms... if your anything like me, visiting all the different forums out there, I can't keep track of them all myself! :eek3:

cg: I believe that I said come out in the plants.
Some plants with red pigment will become green pigmented when lighting is not sufficient.

Ok just cause a red plant is suposed to be red dosen't always mean its health. Light is not what makes red plants red but targeting a specific nitrate and phosphate level. From what I've benn told you can starve a plant of nitrte for a week and it will turn red. And am I the only one that thinks the fishless cycle with plants in the tank is asking for trouble(hair/thread algea). Just my thoughts on the subject.

Gotcha... just wasn't quite sure what you meant. We'll see how it does over the next couple weeks. Removed two shoots tonight that were well on their way to total meltdown on the Red Crypt, the Green Crypt still looks pretty good.
As for the cycling with plants, we'll see what happens. After doing a fishy cycle on my 20 gallon, I wasn't going to repeat with this one. Tonight's the first night in two weeks that I haven't done a 50% PWC on the tank to keep the Nitrite levels down!
