i've got a 1/2 10g(20x10x6) that i'm trying to lightly plant and because of the tank is so shallow i only put in about 1/2" of sand. can anybody think of some plants i can use? so far i'm planning on taiwan or christmas moss and anubias on the driftwood growing both emergered and submerged and some water lettuce floating, prehaps i could have glosso in the shallow substrate?

I use crypts & even small swords in shallow sand < 1 inch. The trick for me was parking a couple small stones on the roots until they took hold. The swords & r.indica are a little stunted but it's only a 12 in. depth so it's ok for me. I may take out the rotala.

I also have java fern (windelov or lace) that isn't too big.

riccia anachris any floating plant like pennyworth hornwort

i would stay away from big rooted plants like swords or crytps.

i've had riccia before and although it wasn't bad i wasn't very impressed(well, i was by it's stubborness and fast growth, yet i can't keep duckweed alive) i've had crypts before and moving them was always suprising because of how extensive their root systems got, if i could pull them off in 1/2" of sand that'd be great. i don't want a floating plant but a small ground cover type plant.

I started with small, young plants with smaller roots.

I think glosso would work... I have it up against glass and if I recall correctly the roots don't penetrate much at all.

how about HC? plantgeek lists the glosso as a high light plant while HC is a medium and my lighting is going to be 2x13w, although it lists riccia as high light and i've grown it well floating and submerged(although much slower submerged) under a 10w and this tank is very shallow. i like plantgeek as well, not as active as plantedtank though. i just found that there are pygmy crypts, hmm. i hate finding new possibilities like this, i start out with a simple straight forward plant and end up with something completely different.
