Last time I posted I had lost all but two fish. I'm happy to say I still have those two fish, however I still have the cichlid woes. After a week of no fish the aquarium other than the two plecos, I decided to buy one fish to see how he did. I got him home and everything seemed to fine, but a couple days later I noticed when it came out of it's hiding place to eat, the dorsal fin was almost completely gone and there was a big white blotch on its back. It was like it lost it's scales in that area. I worried all night and sure enough when I got the next morning It had died and the blotch had grown to cover almost one side of the fish. :wall:

So I've just decided to start completely over. I'm gonna drain the tank friday and re-set this weekend.

My question is though. I want to replace the rock that I have with drift wood, and I just happen to be going camping next weekend and thought that I might get some from the lake there...is that ok or is it not really a good idea. I also thought about some grass and some other small plants.Would the transition from a natural environment to my home aquarium kill them or could they thrive?

thanks,
goose

Many people will tell you not to use wood found in the wild but I use it all the time. Make sure it is DEAD & DRY and not rotting. I use cedar driftwood in my tanks with no problem except that is leaches tanins for a couple of weeks and this wood has been out of water for over 20 years. I have had plants survive but that will depend on the species. Also be aware that if travelling between states it could be considered a nuisance plant (which many aquarium plants are) and may not legally be able to be moved from one state to another. That is if anyone knows about it.
