Does a hang on back filter negate CO2 ladder? would placement or tempeture change anything?

Thanks in advance

it can. you have to keep the tank as full as you can. minimize surface agitation

mg has it correct.i have mine go into the intake to totally diffuse it.

Depending on your HOB. The output lip on some is lower than others, and I've found my bio-wheel HOB's seem to produce more surface agitation than my Aqua-clear or Whisper HOB's do. With DIY on my 29g I had to run THREE 2L bottles of CO2 and still never dropped pH a full point (with a hagen ladder, which imo had alot to do with it too).

That depends on whether or not you are adding CO2. If you add CO2 then excess surface agitation will drive some of it off (so a waste). If you are not adding CO2 then it hurts nothing. The agitation will lead to increased gas exchange with the atmosphere, so not a bad thing.

Just a comment, but running it into the intake is meant for cannisters. I'd recommend a different way of diffusing the co2 if you are running a HOB.

With an HOB, there is an inevitable loss of co2, you can minimize that loss, but you will still lose some. My thought is to diffuse it seperately from the HOB, and therefore you are raising the level of co2 in the tank before it hits the HOB. Having the co2 run into the co2 raises the level of co2 in the HOB....just before the HOB gases it off.
