I find these are the worst filters at times! how do I remove the charcoal while keeping the darn things together? any of you have a better way or a better filter for these stupid things??
I get sick of the charcoal coming out when I rinse off in the buckets at water changing times, and then the mess of trying to get it out to medicate the tank. what do you all do ? ( and no I am not going to go out today and buy different HOB'S LOL! ) is there a better filter for these HOB's I am not aware of??

I am thinking of ordering this and just wraping it around the filter back. sort of a DIY . what do you think?

I just ordered this,

I don't use the carbon instead I use a piece of polyester bating behind the sponge or just two of those sponges.

I just went and ordered! I am so happy, I do have these for my whispers, but did nto know they made them for penquin biowheel. I am thrilled. with the floss I bought and the frame these come with my tanks are all set up for filters for 2 years! ( I ordered 5 packages of the roll blue floss :)

The blue floss is good but you can go to Walmart and get the thin pollyester batting in a large roll for about 2 bucks. Just a suggestion to cut cost for you in the future.

I know, I saw that. but i got this as its pretty well put together and like filter pad. also I got enough for a very long time. I like the fact I can add charcoal when I want, and not when I need to not have it. pretty cool. and I liked the ones at doc fosters you sent me to. the cage for it will be very helpful, and I already got sponges seeded :)

Cool If you need more sponges or camshells (the black tray the media sets in) Drsfostersmith will give you the number to the Imagine company that makes them. They will send them to you free of charge. I have had them send me 10-15 of them over the years that have broke or when I needed more, just an FYI.

I ditched the filter pads as soon as I bought my emperor, I just fill them up with lava rock.
