Eheim 2213 Double-Tap Disconnect Valves

Having some trouble figuring out what to do with these things as I'm initially setting up my Eheim 2213. The instructions are pretty pathetic and I've read conflicting things otherwise. Do they connect to the canister itself or am I supposed to cut the tubing in two separate places for each line?

Any quick help would be great.

I cut the tubing so that about 2.5 inches of tubing was attached to the intake and outflow of the filter, and then connected the double-taps to those.

So that way the majority of the tubing is above the valves and preserves most of the water, correct?
