lighting/heat question

I have a 46 bowfront that I will be stocking with plants soon. I want to get a 96 retro kit from AH Supply but am curious how hot these really get. Should I be looking for a way to raise it off the tank as well?

Room is always nice and cool because it's my home office. My last 46 was replaced because the brace broke. Had some scratches in the side as well. Looked like the previous owner had some high power lights over that thing. I'm worried that I'm going to run into the same thing again. Brace broke where there was discoloration due to lighting. At least that's what I am assuming. It could just be a coincidence.
