I have 6 convicts and a large pleco in a 55 gal. Curious to know does it help the fish in any way to have a background on the tank? at night its dark, during the day, ( where the tank is loacated) its fairly bright and the lights of the actual tank dont come on till PM.
Just wondering if there is any benfit to having a background, not just for apperence?
Not sure how everybody else feels on this but it seems to give my fish places to hide when they're stressed out and gives them a little privacy. I try to keep backgrounds on all my tanks because if I were a fish I wouldn't want to be on display from all 4 directions. The right background can bring out some fishes colors and its more appealing to look at in most cases. I'm not a big fan of the real crazy ones so I usually just paint the back and sometimes sides of my tanks with $.94 acrylic walmart paint.

It will make a difference in algae control if your tank is getting daylight from a nearby window behind it, as I guess you're aware since you mentioned lighting. Security and algae are the only factors other than appearance.

thanks for the advice
I have places to hide on all sides of the tank but they always decide to hide on the back wall with the background.
