My Current Satellite 30" light just came in; looks awesome. I've noticed my plants are slowly dying since I only give them 3-4 hours light a day when I'm home at night. I'm thinking of getting a timer so they can have light during the day for about 8hours. Is there a specific light timer that is better than others? I looked into these :

1) http://www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS/ctl3684/cp18362/si1379723/cl0/marinelandaquariumlighttimer

2) http://www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS/ctl3684/cp18362/si1378967/cl0/coralifeaqualightdigitalpowercenter

Would these brands work with my light ? Overall, I want something simple to use which will last long and won't blast my electricity bills.

Any timer will work. I use an el'cheapo hardware special that cost be $3 and has 1 outlet plug (all I need for my Hood)

x2...some of my lights i needed to buy the more expensive "heavy duty" timers because they had grounded plugs.

x3, I have the grounded one from the hardware store and it cost me 6 dollars. I don't need my lunar lights on a timer so I didn't bother with anything fancy shmancy.

IMHO, forget the typical wisdom!

Turn the lights on when you wake up. Feed the fish while you are drinking coffee and enjoy them.

Feed the fish again when you get home and enjoy them.

Turn the lights off.

When algae shows up please generate another thread.

LOL why have to solve a problem when you can prevent it?

Leo:

The theory here is optimization of fish happiness and plant growth.

When either under feeding and/or under lighting as well as under fertilization is present algae will not be observed.

Increase the above stated protocols until algae shows up and then begin experimenting to reduce the algae but maintain the other conditions at their optimum states.
