I know many use crushed coral in their reef tanks, but i was wondering about regular sand? is this safe for marine fish, invertebrates and corals?

I personally would not use CC in my tank, I heard that it's a trap for nitrate spikes. Just use live sand it looks better anyways. lol

have heard ffrom numerous people especially on these boards, also look at the first sticky in this forum Crushed coral problem waiting to happen, i'd go with just sand

I would agree with the above...I think crushed coral "is" a problem waiting to happen. One of the major issues with crushed coral is that it traps detrius and food particles..These then produce undesirable nitrates...Stick to reef grade sand, sugar grain size is about the most common..

i think the question is if it's safe to use regular sand - meaning - play sand..? if so, that is debatable. i just upgraded tanks and did a lot of research on this and desided not to go with play sand. some ppl have luck with it in their tanks while others swear that they have terrible algae problems that they believe is due to the play sand. i went with a LS that i bought off ebay that i am EXTREMELY happy with. the seller was figisandman i believe. another user on these boards just purchased some of this sand as well and was very happy with his purchase. the sand was cheaper than buying aragonite from any lfs and basically the just a little more expensive than buying aragonite online.
