View Full Version : Proper amount of filtration
confusion

I have a 125G tank that has 2 rena XP3 filters. Though the filters are rated at 350gph, with media in, they only do somewhere around 180gph, meaning that I have about 3 water turn-over's per hour. That seems pretty low to me. Is there is good rule of thumb on number of water turn overs per hour?
The tank is well stocked, so I would be on the high side of whatever is needed, I think.
I had an opportunity to buy a rena XP4 tonight, but before I do, I want to see if it's just ridiculus overkill, or if it makes sense.
Thanks!

No such thing as overfiltration, its water current you want to watch out for.
Btw mg, nice avatar. I love SG-1.

IMO what you have is fine. From what I've gathered, the larger the tank, the less of a turnover rate you need. Although one can't have enough.

sound be fine. i mean you could add another filter if you want. its hard to over filter a tank.
I found this article helpful.

You have found what most people ignore...filter rating are greatly over rated and only about half of the stated gph, once media is inserted.
I usually do not settle for less than 6 times turnover per hour.

Why do you gotta watch out for current? I have about 59X turnover in my 29g SW tank but that's because some corals need high flow. What should the turnover be in a planted FW tank? Their should be a lack of surface agitation in a planted tank to preserve the co2 gases correct?
I like her Dexter avatar better btw. :) I've only seen the first six episodes of season one but they started giving the show on ABC I think, now I can watch the rest! :D

current...? Some freshwater fish can be easily battered by high flow conditions. Others, love it.

59X turnover rate is great for a SW Reef, however most FW fish couldn't stand that much. And yes, surface agitation should be kept to none or as low as possible in a planted tank.
