I use a sponge in my filter and have had no nitrate issues. With that said, I have to clean them weekly to keep them from producing the nitrate spikes nycsicktank mentioned. The only reason I still use it is I like the dibris it collects. And my filter is really easy to clean quickly.
I only use it in the QT tank, although I do seed it by leaving a clean one in the sump for future use in the QT. I don't use a sponge filter on the display because I use biological filtration instead. Less maintenance and it looks prettier.

Without some kind of mechanical aspect to your aquarium the bacteria on your rock would not receive enough oxygen to live. Just because you may have the powerhead(or pumps) separate does not make the filtration any more "natural". I'm also not sure why you are arguing semantics. The fact is sponge filtration is biological filtration. It can work quite well too.
