The only bad thing about using carbon that I have heard is the price and frequency you have to replace it.. other than that, I use it and change it out monthly since the day I setup my tank almost 6 years ago now..

But no, carbon isn't required... and you can get away with not using it, but for me, it just gives me a little peace of mind. I have been doing my tank maint a certain way for years and it seems to work for me, so I figure why change and have a chance something gets out of wack with the water. I don't mind paying $8 a month for a bag of Chemi-Pure. Heck, I pay more than twice that much a month just in filter pads.

It's not absolutely needed however I recommend running carbon (or something similar) along with GFO (phosphate remover).

I don't run it 24/7. I only use it when adding a new coral or there has been another 'event' in the tank.

i heard that if the carbon also absourb the coral gel (how to said that like if the coral die)... so it will not effect the other coral or fish
