So I got up the other morning & was getting ready to do Hattori's water change and when I uncoverd the lid, I saw bubbles! I have looked at bubble-nests online, but those all seemed to be foam-like; maybe this was just the beginning stages of one? Take a Look.

I have only ever seem Hattori Flare at the store when he was surrounded by all the other bettas in their cups, so I just had to do it...I put my little mirror up to him and sure enough, he flared. I feel a bit guilty for laughing, but it was so cute! Do bettas enjoy having the company of another betta in a separate tank next to their own? If so I will deffinantly look into another cutie pie.

Pretty fish, nice photos. The bubbles are not a complete nest yet. Give it time. The best compliment our fish can pay us is to try to reproduce. It means we are providing all the husbandry they need for excellent living conditions.

I'm not sure bettas 'enjoy' having company that induces flaring - it's a natural response, for sure, so in theory harmless, but it undoubtedly costs additional energy, since muscles must be contracted to produce the change in shape! It's a bit like asking if two pitbulls enjoy fighting...probably not, I'd say, but they'll do it in order to protect themselves and their food/shelter source! By all means use a mirror occasionally, but I don't think constant flaring is something we should aim for. Maybe in the wild there are opportunities to fight, escape and live to fight another day; in our tanks, they are constrained by the walls of glass. Sorry to sound so po-faced...just my take on it.

By the way, that is one of the prettiest bettas I've seen :)

That is one good looking betta you've got there. I've read that you can sorta exercise your betta by moving the mirror around the tank and letting him flare at it. And the bubble nest probably means that he's happy in his new home.

awsome next step if you want baby bettas is getting a female for him. But trust me it takes a long time and alot of patience I still havent accomplished it yet. But im not giving up. Good luck!

Nice betta.

Wait --- the bubbles are a good thing? I got a betta about a month ago and didn't think it could possibly be a bubblenest because I didn't know anything (still don't but now I have to read more!) That's what it is? What do you do when you have to change some water? Won't it disappear (like um, it has when I changed some water)? I need to read up on this!!!
