View Full Version : My first tank - Journal

After doing a LOT of research and asking of questions, I have just set up my first aquarium. It's a 29g that I am setting up as a planted community tank. I am using a 65w Coralife single bulb fixture, an AquaClear 50 HOB, Jager 150w heater and 40lbs of Eco Complete. I crafted a lid for the top out of a sheet of Lexan from Home Depot (was cheaper and more clear than the acrylic they had at Lowe's). The driftwood on the left and the rock are from an LFS, the middle two pieces of driftwood were bought on aquabid from the user Redcrane (whom I recommend, gives free shipping on some pieces).

I know this is out of favor on this board, but I am doing a fish-in cycle with this tank. So far I have only added 4 fish - 3 Bloodfin Tetras and a juvenile Bristlenose Pleco. I test my water parameters daily, and do water changes when needed, which has been once so far (added fish and plants on the 6th).

I plan on slowly adding some Cardinal and Rummy Nose tetras and a pair of German Blue Rams. I need to clean my glass, and I am just learning how to take pictures of the aquarium, but I have a pretty old camera (Canon Powershot SD110) which I may upgrade soon because the pictures I am getting are not on par with some of the beautiful ones I see on this site.

The plants are Green Wendtii, mystery plant (crypt?) on the left in back which I would appreciate the name of if someone recognizes it, Anubias Nana, Micro Sword, and Giant Hairgrass. The small crypts are doing pretty well, not melting too much. I need to bury the roots on the far left one a bit more I think. The mystery plant is melting a bit, need to give him a trim. The Anubias, Micro Sword and Hairgrass are all doing pretty well.

Left side of tank. Plants are Green Wendtii, Anubias Nana and the larger one in the back was not specified at the LFS. The three crypts are melting and I need to trim them, and bury the left one a bit more.

Right side of tank. Micro sword in the front, which along with my Anubias is doing the best of my plants. In the back behind that rock is Giant Hairgrass. It's turning kinda brown at the root in some places, so I may need to move it where the light can hit the roots better as the rock blocks some of them.

Bristlenose Pleco. He's pretty small, and he is more active than any pleco I've seen before. I've been calling him Wally.

A trio of Bloodfin Tetras. They are very active, always swimming around looking for food and going in between the plants and driftwoods.

I will keep this thread updated as I add more things, and if you have requests for pictures of anything I will add them too.

Thanks for the compliments. I am going to get a sheet of black posterboard to see how I like it, and if I like the look of a black background I will eventually paint the back with a roller.

Great start. I'll be interested to read of your experiences painting the back after the tank is set up. I imagine that would look really weird to the fish inside. :)

I'm sure it will be a pain in the ***! At some point I will do a large water change, maybe like a 50%. Hopefully at that point my dad or brothers can help me scoot the tank away from the wall a bit more so I can have a decent amount of space to work with.
