I got my new light today but it smells. It smells like a combination of burning plastic and electrical. Their is no smoke or anything that shows a sign of a fire.It has been on for one hour now. It is a 48" 4x65W 260w total Coralife FRESHWATER Aqualight. Is this a normal thing for new lights to go threw or is there something wrong?

:sniffs: hmm smells new
Could just be the new parts warming up, I would do what was already stated, either air it out or leave it on and if the smell gets stronger I would then go into panic mode.

I'd be very careful with it. Does it have fans? If so are the fans working properly or are they louder than you feel they shoud be. Ensure that they are getting some ventilation so a not to get too hot. I've never had new bulbs smell funny. Be careful though, it may be something shorting (electrically). Let it dryout just incase you got condensation or water in it then watch it carefully if it continues to smell funny you may want to return it.

If it is burning, be aware that PCBs and other electronics parts that burn often release carcinogens.
If you want to run it for a while, do it OUTSIDE.

Let's get down to the obvious. All new things come packed somehow so they don't break in shipping. Have you checked carefully to find the piece of packing material that is touching something that gets hot?

I wanted to let you all know that the smell is gone.I think it was just that new plastic smell getting blown out of the inclosed casing with the fans.It has not smelled since 3 days after I got it.

 Have a similar 48" power compact 260w set-up (Current Dual Satellite). Make sure there is nothing blocking on either end of the fixture (both ends open necessary for adequate ventilation). Is the fixture 'hot' or just 'warm' to the touch'? Shouldn't get 'hot' if cooling fan is functioning properly. If the smell continues or gets worse I would contact the mfg. Their R&D people might be helpful. Coralife now part of the Oceanic family parented by Central Aquatics Inc. aka Central Garden & Pet I belive
