Trimming Rotala Macandra

It's growing quite well, and is now spreading out on the surface. I've read that trimming and replanting the upper section, which has the most abundant growth, offers the best chance of success. That's my plan, but what about the remaining root section? Can that still regrow if it gets enough light? Thanks for the help. Tackful:)
