Well, all the blueprints are done, and the construction will start this week for my 55G corner tank. Of course, every time I think I've got everything figured out, I come up with a new problem...

I'm planning on running 3 powerheads for internal flow, and realized that mag-mount won't work through 1" of plywood, and the suction cups will not likely stick to the epoxy, so I was wondering how you folks with plywood tanks manage to mount your powerheads? Since mechanical parts will eventually fail, I wouldn't think a permenant method would be a good idea...

You could use mag-float algae cleaners...i bet the mid-sized one i have would stick through 1" of plywood. It would be a bit of a large mount though. Either than or cut some sort of bracket out of acrylic and epoxy it permanently in place, some sort of cradle mount for it, so the bracket is permanent but the powerhead can easily be removed.

This would probably do it.
Dimensions: 1" dia. x 1/8" thick
Tolerances: ±0.002" x ±0.002"
Material: NdFeB, Grade N50
Plating/Coating: Ni-Cu-Ni (Nickel)
Magnetization Direction: Axial (Poles on Flat Ends)
Weight: 0.426 oz. (12.1 g)
Pull Force: 81.50 lbs
Surface Field: 3095 Gauss
Brmax: 14,500 Gauss
BHmax: 50 MGOe

Neo magnets are amazing. I wonder if they would effect the operation of the powerhead, though. They're awfully powerful!

I guess that would have to be considered... I guess you have to come up w/ enough gauss to hold through 1" w/o having so much that you *bend* the impellor rod (hey - what's that scraping noise?).

There are always the Tunze Turbelle powerheads. But yeah, cha ching! Here is a thought though, I've seen some amazing homemade tanks where they mounted their powerheads into mainmade rock sections. It was a great way to hide the equipment, although it would certainly limit the flexibility of being able to move it.
