Hi all
So, I have my 5-gallon tank at college with me, and come summer, I have a 10-hour drive back home. The living inhabitants are: some guppies, 2 cory cats, and a dwarf platy, and a plant.

I bought a good-sized (maybe 1.5 gallon) critter cage - the plastic kind that little kids keep hamsters in. If I just take water from the tank and stick the fish in will they be all right for the ride? I would then put the plastic tank in a box on the floor in the front of the car near the heater so they dont get cold.

Thanks! :)

fish+car ride= FUN

Thanks for the responses! I just want to make sure they won't die on me. I planned on keeping a little water in the glass tank.

Any must-know rules about getting the fish back in the tank when I get home? Should I let the new water cycle overnight first? I don't want to leave the fish in still water for too long...

i would probably bring them to your lfs in a bucket, ask them to bag them all up for you properly, and then use a cooler for the car ride.

i have moved many fish in rubbermaid tubs or gladware. the thing i would be worried about is the different water. when you get to the new place i would fill your take up let it run. then i would change about a 1/2 coup a water every 15-30 mins. this way you can slowly get them used to the new water.

Do you mean take a cup out of my transport tank and put a cup of the new water in? If so, I should just toss the water from the transport tank, right? Sorry if I should stupid I just want to make sure my fish live to tell of their adventure....

As for getting them bagged, I'm really not fond of the stores near me, so I'd rather try to avoid them.

Thanks for the responses!! :)

yes its called acclimation. this way they dont get ph shock. i would a half a cup.... measuring cup that is....

I would eliminate the transport tank and bags completely. Why not simply put them all in as large a cooler as you can afford. Fill it 1/2 way with water. Bag the substrate though. Every hour or so, stop and open the cooler lid for a while to let the oxygen level climb or, even better, get a battery operated air pump, airline, and an airstone. The larger cooler provides thermal control and the open area gives the fish more space. Also, either lid opening or airstone helps keep enough oxygen.
