I'm currently building a wooden hood for my son's 20g bowfront tank. I,m not going to use a condensation cover so am going to have to treat the bottom of the hood with something. I know epoxy resin would work well but just wondered if there was a cheaper alternative that would work just as well?

I would imagine any oil-based paint would hold up fine. Heck even latex kilz would probably be good. Plus its white so it would help reflect light back into the tank.

Think about fish jumping out if you don't have a cover on your tank. You will have to take an inventory every morning and evening like they do in the Army to make sure that no one has gone AWOL.

Apply 2 or 3 coats of enamel paint.

1. White colour would be best as it will help in increasing the brightness of your tank when the lights are on.

2. You can choose a different colour of paint depending on the colour of your fish. The fish are capable of changing their colour based on their environment. So for dark coloured fish a dark paint will be good.
