Hi all,

So, checking on the future Betta Palace tonight, I noticed a white fungus, like stringy cotton, growing on the mopani wood. Doing a little search here on AC :read:, I found this thread (http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=139692&highlight=%22white+fungus%22+wood&page=2). While reading it, one quote jumped out at me:

you might not have many species of fungi in your area with an optimal growth temperature of 78F

Sure enough, my tank is exactly at 78. Now, I gather this fungus is harmless, albeit a bit unsightly. My question is this: will it eventually fade, or is the only way to get rid of it to remove the wood and boil and scrub it?

(Note: no fish are in the tank yet, and I don't know if there are any that munch on this stuff.)

Always boil mopani before using it.

Always boil mopani before using it.

The pot I had wasn't right for boiling the piece, so I gave it several soakings in boiling water in the sink. Guess the temperature wasn't sustained for long enough.
