It may be a litte overstocked. So let me help you out. You could have in there 1 firemouth, 1 tiger oscar, 1 convict, 1 jack dempsey, and for dithers you can have some bala sharks or tinfoil barbs, or some silverdollars. Make sure your dithers are larger than the oscar so they don't end up as lunch. Buy all your fish small!

could i drop the oscar and get the red terror

With the stocking suggested above you would need to upgrade to a MUCH larger tank eventually, depending on what size you buy the fish. An oscar can pretty much fill up a 75 on its own, and they dont take very well to others when cramped. I dont think the firemouth or con could take it. And the JD/Oscar mix is hit and miss for some...

1. Red terror will beat the crap out of everything else.

2. Convict will annoy everything else until it is killed.

3. Firemouth will most likely either be bullied or ignored.

4. Jack dempsey will be cool until it all of a sudden grows a 1/2" one day and crosses the threshold of cool to bully.

5. Tiger oscar will take a beating and keep on swimming.

6. See number 1.

All joking aside. If started off small together, they might get along for quite some time. Once they hit 4-5", that's where things change and your tank will become too small. The aggression will escalate at that point.

the red terror will still beat up the other fish...firemouths and cons dont take well to aggression. they arent "tough" enough...

ok, umm.... if i wanted the red terror really bad, what fish could i have with it

much better kept on their own, I think one for your size tank, seeing as they get large (about a foot) anyways

ok would i have problems with like 2 jack dempsy, the firemouth, and 2 convicts

the cons will breed like crazy and while the probably wouldnt overpopulate the tank (the babies would get eaten quickly with that stock) breeding cons are best kept alone. JDs, while not nearly as bad as the RT, are still aggressive. The firemouth would not do well with two JDs AND a breeding pair of cons...

man that sucks, what would you do

None, a 75 is just barely enough for a pair of red terrors. Mine are in a 90 and he still pounds her on occasion. Adult red terrors will kill anything else in a 75.

JD's become a lot more agressive when there is more than one of them.

You need to make some decisions. First of all, would you be happy with a single fish or a single pair (it sounds as if the answer to that is no)? Are you willing to put up with some aggression in the tank (fish getting beaten on, fins nipped, fish you have to rescue occasionally)? If you have breeding pairs, it reduces what you can have in the tank, and you either have to have a place to sell the fry, or other fish to eat them - Is that ok with you?

I'm going to guess that you want a reasonable number of active fish, not too much aggression, and don't really care about breeding (in other words, you're me :omg: ). Firstly, no pairs. Secondly, fish that max out around 8". I've tried a lot of different fish out; all have their good and bad points. Pretty safe choices: keyholes, rams, multispinosa, honduran red points (I like these better than their convict cousins), acara, severum (these push the size limit). These are sort of listed in order of increasing aggressiveness/toughness. Firemouth are ok as long as they aren't the dominant fish (they tend to be bullies). Pushing the size/aggressiveness limits, you get to dempseys (blue dempsey is a better choice than the normal strain; they fit in pretty well). Female nic isn't a bad choice, but ime, it shouldn't be the dominant fish (my female was a bully). Smaller geos are a possibility, but I'm not familiar with them.

Africans are also a possibility (not with the above, however), but again, I'm not familiar with them.

I have a 75 with a trimac(11") and a midas (9"). The midas has the tree root as his home and the trimac has a BIG flower pot. The trimac is the boss but the midas has its moments.

My oscars dont bother my JD's. I have a 55 witch is Way over stocked with 2 oscars, 2 green terrors, 2 cons, at the moment 1 JD, a redhead and a common pleco but I am getting a much bigger tank this summer. I can say that there hasn't been any fin nipping but they get chace happy and every once and a wile someone has a bump on there head. Its good to see that you are doing research first! Now does the 75 gallon have to be SA/CA cichlids or could you go with africans?

i could go with africans, but i like south americans more
