That sounds like a mold or other fungus. You can probably kill it with an antifungal medication like Pimafix.

i took it out removed the carbon started treating with api primafix antifungal then boiled the wood for 35 min then let it sit in cool water for a bit and put it back in the aquarium. its been 24 hours and looks alright, theres some white on the top by the filter output but it may be from there not being any filter media up there. will put that back in tomorrow and update the next day.

all right, after another look the stuff is back in full force. the woods been in for about 24 hours and its about 2-4 millimeters long in some spots. again only on the wood. the wood is Zoo Med African Mopani Wood from petsmart, it is a beautiful piece of wood and i would love to keep it, its fairly large for my 5 gal hex and takes up quite a bit of space but as 2 tunnels that the shrimp love and one of them is large enough for the baby pleco i would like to get(he,ll be in a 30 gal in about 10 mo and is just less than 2 inches now). my dwarf gourami loves the stuff and wont leave the wood alone, he eats alot of it and all he does now is poop and eat. be he cannot eat it all and its quite unsightly, please help.:help:

Sorry to hear your pest is so tough!
You can try soaking or boiling the wood in strong salt water. After you do this you have to put the wood in a bucket of fresh water and soak it for a few days, changing the water often, to get the salt out before you return the wood to your tank.

i wish i had pics, its white and fluffy ish strandy, if that makes sense. and flows in the current. if i take the wood out i cant see it. my ghost shrimp wont bother with it either. the tank is about 2 weeks old, i know I'm going fast but I'm constantly managing the water parameters and all is well, i do a 40% water change every other day and the water i put back in is the same temp with aqua plus.the ph is a bit high i think at 7.25 ish

Don't mean to hijack your thread, but after 2 years of just normal algae stuff I've got something that sounds the same, only it grows all over the inside of the tank walls on my 55g. My Mopani has been in the tank for a year without showing anything, so I doubt it's from that. Should I follow same Pimafix treatment? Thanks alot!!
