hey guys. i wish i could post a pic for this, but i dont own a camera. i bought a piece of live rock from my local store about 2 weeks ago, and it's great. lots of life on it, and one of those forms of life i'm not familiar with. there are two "tentacles" coming out of a very small hole in the rock that come in and go out snatching small particles that come in contact with them. they move about the rock pretty deliberately, not just moved by the current. the "tentacles" are very small, one is about 1/2 an inch long and the other is about 1 inch, and they are very small in diameter, and just a dull grey/brown color. and sometimes they both completely retract into the rock. what could this creature be? is it anything i need to be worried about?? thanks in advance!!

i don't know if it's a starfish b/c the whole it's coming out of is just a small hole in the top of the rock, it's not coming out from under anything, it's just coming out of the top of the rock. is it possible for any kind of starfish to do that?

hmm sounds like a brittle starfish, here take a look at a pic of mine and tell me if it looks like that.

hmmm...is it that thing at the top and center of the rock? if so mine looks a lot like that. the thing hasn't moved from the same spot since i've noticed it today, and one of the little tentacles/legs came out again, but was about twice as long, so about 2 inches this time. it was just snaking around the rock as if searching for something. the legs are almost transparent. the craziest thing i've ever seen....maybe it'll come out of that hole sometime and i'll be able to see it, but with legs that long i have a hard time seeing how its body could fit in such a tiny/shallow hole... thanks for posting the pic, it helps a lot!!! i really appreciate it.

thanks feather duster! i have a banded serpent star, and i guess i thought that it would just be a smaller version, but a smaller body/leg proportion would explain it!

Your welcome ;) Glad I could be of help. And micro brittle stars are one of my favorite hitchhikers so you shouldn't worry about them. I have about 30-40 of those guys in my 10G and an unkown number in my 35G. They don't do any harm, but are very cool to watch and do a great at cleaning up your sand bed and eating uneaten food. I have two types. The banded macro stars like hiepnotik showed and the white ones. From my experience the banded ones grow larger than the white ones (definitely not full on serpent star size though). But you are more likely to see the white ones come out of their cave. They move pretty fast when they want to.

ok, i was at a fish supplier today, and when i described to him this unknown creature he said that it could be a very small octopus in the crevices of the rock. is this right? i've never heard of anything like that, but like i've said, i'm new at this. i just wanted to run this by all you seasoned ones out there...
