I am doing a fishless cycle right now on my first tank. I have noticed that a layer of something has formed on the top of the water. I moved the filter nozzle so that it agitates the top of the water but the layer of stuff is still there and it is not going away. If you pour something into the water or touch the top of the water you can see the layer break up and you can see the stuff still floating.

What is this layer? Any way to get rid of it?

Get more surface agitation by lowering you water level.

What ammonia source are you using?

I am just using pure ammonia.

I just finished my tests and the ammonia is approximately 2 ppm. The nitrites is approximatley 20 ppm and the nitrate is approximately 20 ppm

are you sure your nitrites are at 20 ppm, and not 2.0 ppm?

You're right, I left out the decimal. I have increased the surface agitation and the film has gone away and not come back.
