Hi all, I have decided to venture out and acually try to travel by car. I know that sounds dumb, but I have always traveled by plane, got to the destination and that was it. I have decided to take my kids on an adventure and we are going to seaside to the aquarium, and down the coast.
now for my questions to those who live in oregon.... what cool things are there besides the aquarium in seaside, and I believe newport?
what is along the way that is easy to get to , off 101, and along the coast ?
Any sort of family parks with rides? beaches that are easy to get to and not to far to walk onto? tide pools ? please, we will be gone 1 week, and want to see thigs but not get lost. I do not do well driving long distances and need to stick onto 101 to get there and back from Montana.
I look forward to seeing pictures, your help in finding neat things for a 5 ,7, and 13 year old.
This is our first trip ever to explorer, I am to old to go far any more as I do not see as good as I used to, nor do I have a good ability to find my way LOL! !!! Any help would be so wonderful, and if you got pictures that would be awsome. :)

We want to go the first week of June, so its not to hot, and less traffic and tourism. good on the path motels and hotels that will not cost much but are close to the ocean if possible.

I don't have any advice, but the Oregon coast trip sounded pretty cool.
I am sure you could find some things on the internet. I think you should do it!
Maybe some help here? http://www.traveloregon.com/

theirs lots of "old fashion" candy stores there, some buildings have nice paintings of whales on them, theirs a restaraunt there called Moes(has the best clam chowder ever), therers a wax museum and a ripleys one too. Hay stack rock is a good place for tide-pooling and shell collecting.

did you say seaside or newport?

We want to go to seaside and newport.. but when we called this motel to make a reservation, the guy told us June was not a good month to go. Said the weather was still very cold on the coast there. he said your chances of having lots of and cold is high. hummmmm

I lived in Astoria, which is on the coast right by Seaside, from '98 until about 2002. It truly is a beautiful area! There is much to see and do. In Astoria there is the local landmark of the Astoria Column and in Warrenton, there is Fort Stevens State Park, which is a beautiful recreation area full of hiking trails and gorgeous beaches. There is also the Lewis and Clark museum. Seaside's aquarium really isn't anything that spectacular, it's a small town with a small aquarium. The boardwalk is neat for about an hour and then it gets pretty boring. There is a decent size arcade right downtown (with an Elephant Ear shop right across the street where I worked as a teen!) and a lot of neat little tourist trap kinda shops.

As far as weather and when to go. I would recommend visiting in the August/September time frame. The coast is beautiful all year (very moderate temps) it doesn't ever really get *hot*

I have been to the aquarium in Newport as well, but that was while Keiko was still there and that was pretty neat. I don't know anything else about Newport really. If you have any specific questions about the Seaside/Astoria/Warrenton area let me know!
