The tank is a 100 gallon tank, or 375 litres as we say here in Sweden. ;)

The juvenile-jag goes in a 60 gallon tank with a whole bunch of other cichlids. Here's a picture.

A question about the pics though...

How do you get your pics to not blur! Mine are always blurry, no matter what I seem to do...i.e., do you use flash, zoom, are the lights on outside the tank...or do you have a manual focus? My camera, (Digital Canon A40,) always seems to focus on something besides the fish, I can never get a sharp picture.

I don't know much about cichlids, what exact species are those? They sure are beautiful. How old are they?

Sorry about the delay, different time-zone, had to sleep... ;)

First, thank you all for your nice comments. :)

Rocketman:
"How do you get your pics to not blur! Mine are always blurry, no matter what I seem to do...i.e., do you use flash, zoom, are the lights on outside the tank...or do you have a manual focus?"

I used to use flash but I stopped because the fishes didn't look as good as in real life, they got weird colors and I didn't like that. The pics of the tank with the bench and all is taken at daytime to get the right color on the bench, all the other pics are taken at the evening with no light outside of the tank.
I never use zoom, I don't use a stand for the camera so zooming will only make it even harder to hold the camera still. As for the focus-thing I use something that is called "spot-focus" or something like that. The display gets a "crosshair" and I can point on a certain thing to get the focus on just that specific thing, I normally point the "crosshair" at the eyes of the fish when the fish stands still and then wait until the fish stands absolutely still in that position before I take the picture...
In other words, it can take quite a while before I get that perfect shot... ;)
But jags at this size aren't as excited when you aproach the tank as small fishes, they just stare back at you and wonders why you're staring at them. ;) So it's actually not that hard to get a good shot if you just wait for a while.

1 fish 2 fish:
"every time I see a good sized jag I am amazed at the size of their mouths"

I know what you mean, it's actually quite scary to clean their tank nowadays, they have powerful jaws, fangs in their lowerlip and could possibly hurt you quite a bit if they wanted to...

Dragon_Lord_Tia:
"either the tanks huge or the jags are tiny wich it wich lol

Both are tiny as far as I'm concerned. ;)
The tank is about 5 feet long, or 150 centimeters to be exact.
The jags are about 10 and 8 inches, or 26 and 22 centimeters to be exact. I'll probably need a bigger tank pretty soon.

caffeine:
"I don't know much about cichlids, what exact species are those? They sure are beautiful. How old are they?"

The scientific name is Parachromis managuensis but you usually just call them managuenses, jaguarcichlids, jaguars or jags.

I bought mine for about a year ago, they were 2" at that time, so I would guess that they are 1.5 years old or something like that.

Those are some awesome pics!! I have one male jag. We are hoping to get a larger tank soon before he gets too big for the one he is in now. I would like to go 10 gallons bigger, at the very least. He is in a 65 gal. right now.

He is cleaning a slate like crazy and fanning it. There is no other fish in the tank with him. I had heard that the male can be very violent to the female. Do you keep your's together all the time with no problem? I was wondering if he is in breeding 'mood' by his behavior. Is it normal for the male to clean the slate for breeding?

I had read that they have a large outcome in fry. I can see that is totally true.

Thanks for those pics.

"Do you keep your's together all the time with no problem?"

Yes they've lived together unseparated since I got them, but I can't say that it hasn't been any problems... Bare tanks is a big no-no when having jags... the male pretty much go crazy when it's time to breed so it's very important that there are lots of rocks and other stuff that the female can hide among when the male snaps...

"I was wondering if he is in breeding 'mood' by his behavior. Is it normal for the male to clean the slate for breeding?"

It sounds perfectly normal, get him a girlfriend and they'll probably breed. :)

Everybody:
Here is a pretty new movie when the breeding pair is just taking it easy... The male looks really good in this movie. (9.4MB)

Impressive movie, very impressive fish. I have only seen one in person and it was at a LFS that was in about a 30 gallon. It was about 5" and just sat in the corner. Thanks for sharing that it really gave me a better idea of what to expect if I kept some. It was really cool to see the fry swimming at the bottom, although you could barely see them.

I really didn't like them till I saw your pics, WOW! I had only seen two 8 inchers in a 40 gallon at a LFS and they didn't look to pretty or happy....

Another question ...... It appears they are good parents, is that true? Or will they sometimes eat the fry?

Thanks.

Lila Boffins:
"It appears they are good parents, is that true?"

That's perfectly true, jags are wonderful parents and they won't let anyting hurt their fry even if there are only 10 of the little ones left when they're about to breed again. :)

Hi Fredrik,

Love the photos & love the fish.

The shot with the mass of fry is quite a sight.

What will you do when they almost double their size, they will be a real handfull then.:D :D

Great pictures. Fabulous fish. Nice aquascaping, too. Did I leave anything out? Just goes to show what can be achieved by the conscientious hobbyist. Since your tanks and fish are obviously doing so well, care to share your maintenance and feeding routines? I'm sure we'd all like to emulate them.

P.S. Please do keep posting pics. They're a great
stress reliever.

Thanks, all of you, you are almost too kind. :)

jmcc:
"What will you do when they almost double their size, they will be a real handfull then."

They won't quite double their size but jags could get atleast 16" in captivity and that's pretty big too... ;)
They grow pretty slow right now but they'll probably need a bigger tank in about a year or so, probably a 200-300gallon tank or something like that. It's gonna be quite a sight. :D

Harry Tolen:
"Since your tanks and fish are obviously doing so well, care to share your maintenance and feeding routines?"

I'm actually not doing anything out of the ordinary...
I just feed them and clean their tank... that's all.

Tank maintenance:
I do a partial waterchange(30-40%) every week and siphon the gravel once or twice a month.

Fish maintenance:
At first I fed them with a whole bunch of different frozen food, like bloodworms, shrimps, krill, pieces of fish, mysis and stuff like that... But nowadays they only eat Hikaripellets(cichlid gold), Sera Cichlidsticks and some occasional feederfish, they won't even go near the frozen food I gave them before, it's all very weird and I'm actually starving them right now to get them to accept some other food too...

What else...
Oh, I try to have some feeders(giant danios) in their tank atleast once every two months, just so that they won't get too bored when I'm not entertaining them. ;)
