I found a 60 Gallon Tank, Stand, Hood, lights and some plants and Crushed Coral for sale for $150 on Craigslist in my area. Is this a good deal?
I'm new to fish keeping. I have two small betta tanks and a 5 gallon for my daughter with 3 guppies. I also have a 10 gal that's not set up yet. If I get the larger tank, I'll have the 10 as a Qt.
I am considering a few things:
a one species tank with tiger barbs and someone on the bottom if they would work with the tiger barbs
a community tank with corys, neons or cardinals and something else
an "orange" tank with platys and maybe some corys
these are just some beginning ideas.
What sort of filtration would you recommend for this tank? And do you have an approximate cost on that - real ball park figures are fine.

Thats a preetty good deal. I got my 55 gallon for $200 dollars - not including gravel, plants, etc... So I would definetly say go for it!
You would probally only need a heater and a filter - together roughly $100- $150, depending on how good the filter/heater is, which company , new or used, etc...
As for the stocking - I'm really not to great at that, but I'm sure someone else will be able to help you out.
The crushed coral will raise the ph though, so if you would like to use that I would get something like African Cichlids.

I would definatly go for that deal. I bought a brand new 55gallon tank, w/hood,stand, lights for about $200. And then I spent about another $120 on filter and supplies.
I consider using different substrate though if your going to make it a cory, barb, community tank.
Also I have an Rena Filstar XP3 canister filter on my 55gallon goldfish tank and i love the filter it runs very quietly.

Go with the Xp3, and yes, that is a very good deal - as long as it is glass, my acrylic aquariums were 1 dollar per gallon - but still, it would be a great deal

pretty good deal, depending on the light...dont get stuck with a puny light.

What would be a puny light? What sort of light would I need? I know that depends upon whether I have live plants.
I'm brand new at this....lots to learn. (Though I completely understand the cycle!)
I'll need set up advice.
Funny thing is I found this on my local Craigslist last night. (I decided to check it out for the first time after reading about some good finds there from you folks.) I just got an email asking if I was the groomer at a specific animal hospital. She noticed the name and said it would be really funny if that was me! Well, it's ME! I bet we know each other and she was a previous client of mine before I became a stay at home mom! Small world!
I think I'm going to go for this...but it may be a while before I get it set up. My husband says it's my call, he doesn't care. It means rearranging the living room but that's easy!

That is a nice tank I think it is the breeder size so it is a lot wider that a 55g. You could do an all barb tank 10 tigers (mix colors?) 7 Oddessa 7 black rubies some gold barbs and maybe 10 assorted corys. Or some Melon barbs Puntius fasciatus grow to six inches
