Reefcam 101...I need instructions. ;-)

I just have a simple Logitech, but I don't use it on the tank so don't know about remote capability and such with it.

Are you really good with networking and computers? You will need to install some webcam software first of all. I think I use a simple one called WebCamXP. Then you have to setup your network/router and have a webserver running. After setting up the proper port forwarding in your router and making sure your PC with the webcam software has a static IP address, then you can start the ball rolling.

One big problem is if your on a residential internet connection and not a business one, technically, your not allowed to "host" anything like websites. If your ISP finds out they will cut you off. Also, with most residential internet connections your public IP address is dynamic, meaning it changes every so often, so you have to make sure you check often to make sure you have the right IP address your connecting to from outside.

It is not a simple plug in camera/install software and go thing..

Simplest solution.... Get a Mac.

Hahaha, then you will be able to do NOTHING like 99% of the Mac users I support. I have a Mac Pro as well as a 17" Macbook Pro.. both SUCK like no tomorrow. Cool design for their hardware.. but crap OS.. "but you can run parallels" is always the arguement.. so buy a $500 Dell then if you want to run Windows.. I also have 12 PCs at my house.. and I will take a PC over a Mac any day of the week. Then there is always the "macs are virus free BS". No they are not, I have dealt with 3 Mac virus's that infected the entire campus at the college I work at in a matter of minutes. Where as I, on a PC, haven't got a virus or anything else malicious since I loaned out a 5-1/4" floppy disk to a friend back in 1991 and got a copy of the Michaelangelo virus on the disk when it was returned. It just comes down to having basic knowledge on how to properly use a computer and properly surf the internet.

Heck, I have built MANY $200 Macs out of PC parts and just installed OSX on those and threw them in the face of the Mac freaks I work with. Side by side comparison the $200 PC beat the $3000 Mac on a lot of things, Photoshop being the biggest suprise to Mac owners.. and if it didn't, it was so close to be unnoticable to the user.

Right now, I am typing this on a 6 year old PC, 3Ghz, 2GB Ram, 2TB hard drive space and I have XP/Vista/Server 2008/OSX 10.5x/Ubuntu all installed on this PC via VMWare and can pick any OS I want in my virual environment and you know what the PC cost me, $500 back in 2002.

I wish I could help, but I am about as computer technology illiterate as they come. It took me forever to figure out how to set up a wireless network. I can only imagine what a camera would do to me .

12%, you are being VERY generous.. before Apple went Intel, they had 4% of the market, last month they had 8%.. not sure where you get 12%...

Even then.. ok, they doubled their percentage.. but how much is that because they did go Intel and now can run Windows on them.. hmmmmm? Many sheep in this world, many people want to be "cool" and for some, a Mac does that for them in their mind. To me, it is a insanely overpriced PC now because all the parts inside a Mac are the EXACT same parts you can buy on Newegg for 10% of the cost, and with just a phillips screwdriver, you can build your own PC/Mac for a fraction of the cost and the only thing you miss in the Apple Logo.. I will sell you a $2700 Apple Sticker on a $300 PC if you wanna be "cool" and say you have a Mac.. I will even install OSX for you so it runs like a Mac.

Also, someone PLEASE explain to me how a Mac would change anything having to do with networking/web server/routing/port forwarding.. you know.. the stuff required to configure your network REGARDLESS of the computer at the end. You still need to route/forward the HTTP packets to the correct internal IP address don't you? A Mac isn't going to make that process any easier or harder.

When it comes to computers, I had one placed in my lap at age 4.. an Atari400, modded with a real, home made keyboard, upgraded from 4k of RAM to 48k, some BASIC programming books, a cassette drive, and a BASIC cartridge and told to have at it. I was writing my own video games at age 5.. google "bunny hop atari" and you can see one of my games from way back. I submitted it to Compute! magazine back in 1984 and they published it.
