just looking for ideas, i have an african tank fully stocked, and i just got a 30 gal up and running, was more looking at freshwater fish, but saw a jewel that i fell in love with, i think im going back today to get her, but what else would be suitable for her tank?

I have a pair of jewels that mated and I now have about 10 in a 35 gallon. I gave them their own tank because they are like piranhas. They even killed my 9 inch pleco I had in there. If you have a bunch of them, nothing will live with them. But in your case, I'm pretty sure any african cichlids will live with them as long as you keep them with only one of each fish.

Jewels are WAY to mean!!!!!!!! I would never keep anything with a jewel unless you have a tank with a 55. Even then the jewel might still kill something. My friend has a 125 with a jewel, jack dempsey, dovii, and a couple of oscars. That tank is terrible!! The dovii and Jewel fight all the time. His jewel killed a jag. Thats how mean they are!!

Hmmm...my jewel plays nice with the other fish. Hes in my 55g African with a socoloffi, demasoni, 2 yellow labs, 1 blue johanni and 1 blue cobalt. So far there are no problems and hes been in the tank for about 3 months i'd say.

I have a jewel in a SA/CA tank setup the jewel is the quietest one in the tank it doesn't pick fights with the other fish, pretty much stays to itself. I do know though if i put another one in there their aggression level will go up. Mine is about five inches long. I have with it a JD, GT, RT, nicaranguese, bucktooth tetra, convicts(blue/black) an oscar and green severums. The only one being picked on is the Oscar. The bucktooth tetras can live with piranhas and they stay small so might be a good choice to have a couple in a smaller tank. Hope this helps

I have 3 jewels . . . 2 are turquoise and I'm not sure what the other is. I put them in an mbuna tank as juveniles and they are fine. I would stock with Cynotilapia, Iodotropheus, Labeotropheus they aren't quite as agressive.

so i got the turquiose jewel i fell in love with :D She is a juvenile and was in a tank with a few cat fish, so i was looking into some of the smaller breeds, and i may get a pictus cat because they stay small, and i heard barbs might be ok possibly or gouramis...any thoughts?

Jewel

I've got two Five-Spot Jewels. The male jewel is in a tank by himself. The female jewel shares a 75gallon with an ornate bichir. It works out quite well with the one jewel and the bichir.

Don't add gouramis or pictus your cichlids will kill them. Gouramis require completely different water parameters. Your jewel will get much larger, be sure to add like kind (cichlids). If you get juvie tankmates they'll grow together and tolerate each other better. You can add a synodontis catfish, they are from Africa also and will survive with your cichlids.

I'd think the jewel would kill barbs, gouramis and probably pictus too as it got bigger. If you are planning to get tankmates, definitely do it sooner than later while so they can all 'grow up' together.
