The males tend to grow larger, and are more brightly colored. The main way to tell is the males develop a (bump) for lack of a better term, on the forehead. :)

If I get them when they are young and the hump hasnt started to grow how do I sex them. The reason why Im asking because I got this GT thinking that it was a male. I red somewhere that you could tell by the fins so now I have 2 females. heres a pic of the other female.

I'd say female, too, based on the fins, but post 6 looks like a male.

Really? what makes you say that? Im trying to learn how to sex fish. I plan on opening a LFS and I think knowing how to sex fish would be a pluss!

Everything I've always been told and have read is that males have longer pointed fins, while the female's fins are rounded.

Found this with a quick google search:
Fin length. Males often have longer, more flowing anal and dorsal fins (the ones on the bottom and top respectively). Again there are many exceptions to this and I have seen female convict cichlids with dorsal fins that extended well past the end of the tail fin. So again, the presence of long fins does not necessarily indicate a male fish.

Yeah sometimes the fins make it really obvious. Males are more colorful when you compare them to a female, but that can get confusing if you compare two males....
Yes your GT is female, males have a nuchal hump when they get larger, and will have thicker bands of orange on the dorsalfin and caudal fin. Also when they grow they get trailers on the dorsal and caudal fins. The best way when they are young is to look at the orange bands.

Thanks for your input! Ill check out the web page and do some reading. When I go to the LFS Ill look for the thicker orange bands when they are young and the nuchal hump when they are bigger. Is a 40 gallon breeder tank large enough to house a male and female when breeding them?
A pair of adults would need a 75 gallon tank. The males get to over 12 inches.

with most cichlids, males have longer, flowing, pointed dorsal fins.

Find one resembling this and stick em in a 75 gal. or bigger!
Watch out, if you have other fish in the tank they will get destroyed.
Once they start breeding they get real rough.
They will also start spawning repeatedly and you will be stuck with a decision
on what to do with hundreds and hundreds of fish!

Due to the nature of my breeding terrors and others I've witnessed I would say they can comfortably breed in a thirty five to forty gallon tank. The female really establishes herself and the male ends up guarding the farther peramiters of the nest. She never seems to back down after the eggs are "glued". The male Terror does not try to bully the female after the courtship..Only before, Where it can seem a bit out of hand. Just make sure you put some sort of cave type structure where the female can hide from the male until she spawns. The male terror seems to play a good role in helping the female after spawning. She keeps him in check while he bullies anyone peering into the tank.
If you don't remove fry you will still end up with many that live with the parents. I was talking with my lfs about my GT spawning and the clerk stated.."You will have plenty of feeders"!
At first I thought..this guy is a jerk! But after reading about their breeding category as being "nuclear" I soon realized there are so many fish that make it that you need to buy a few more tanks just to raise the high number of fry.
I hope you have room!
