Is it ideal to have surface movement in the display portion of my tank? In other words, is gas exchange the only reason for needing surface movement? If there is surface movement in a sump is that sufficient?

On the main tank, I say yes, besides the gas exchange it also helps break up disolved organic compounds that hang out near the surface.

Not sure about the sump.. I am sure it would probably help, but honestly, my fuge surface is nasty due to lack of surface movement coupled with way to much grape calupra that I need to trim this weekend.

yeah I mean my setup is kind of weird.. I have an aquapod which basically has the sump are built in, and then I added a HOB fuge that pumps water out from the sump and overflows back into the sump area.. sounds like breaking up scum on the water surface is a good reason to keep surface movement in the display though.

my main issue is that I have my pump return line Y'ed already, and I have a powerhead, but I am still worried because it seems like all the detritus blows behind the rocks and I don't have anything pointed back there.

For me I think it would be that my tank has more exposure to the outside world so to speak than my sump. My sump only has the opening from the back of the stand itself. That will change if I can ever get started on my project and will probably have to create surface aggitation in my sump as well to increase the gas exchange. Right now my only aggitation is on my DT. But then I have MH lights and I like the reflections it creates within my tank..

I prefer to have lots of surface agitation. It actually helps maintain a steady pH and I have zero dissolved oxygen problems. While I agree some splashing in the sump will help, I don't feel that it is really sufficient, either.
