Hi all,
Should this little critter be in my tank. Should I keep it or remove it?
What is it?
It measures about 1" long.

Ewwww! Looks like a Mantis shrimp.. If that is what it is then I don't think they are good in most tanks, but I don't have personal experience to say for sure.

A better pic would be better but looks like a stomatopod to me (mantis shrimp). I think they're awesome, but a lot of people don't like them in display tanks as, depending on the species, they'll kill all your snails and shrimp, or most of the fish.

Thanks guys, just did a google search for mantis shrimp, i know the pic is not good for you to see but from the pics on google, thats what it is.
Will eat the contents of my tank if i leave it in there then.:eek::eek::eek:
They are quite nasty, there is a couple of clips on youtube also to look at, although these appear to be kept on their own.

Forgot to mention, i have heard a clicking noise/tapping noise in the tank from time to time, would this have been the shrimp?

Thats scary... I hope I never get a mantis shrimp. Yes the clicking was the shrimp.

:grinyes::grinyes::grinyes::grinyes: My mate is comin round for a few beers tonite, i have saved the offending item for him to see.:grinyes:
He has heard a clicking/tapping from his tank when he put his rock in. Its a big tank with lots of rock. Its been up and running for about 4 months and has found some crabs and snails dead/eaten, but could not find out why they were dead/what had killed them.
It must be a biggie to kill crabs and snails sureley.
He doesnt know about mine yet.........Wait till he see's it and i show him the wikipedia printout of its behaviour:eek3::eek3::eek3::eek3::eek3:
Poor kid will be havin nightmares, he's got about 5 corals, a pair of clowns and some others as well as the odd snail and crab which he has left!
Scarey really, what if you buy a coral attached to a rock that has on in:confused:
I used to have a few bristle worms in the tank, they seem to have gone:eek:
