Been doing a lot of reading on this and have some fuzzies to clear up if someone would like to assist. I have had read many articles and posts on larger tanks and it seems there are a mix to have overflows via straight piping into a w/d sump and others that have an overflow box with the piping leading to the sump.

Outside of the obvious...what is the difference between using the two methods? Any one preferred over the other? Basically good pros/cons on the setups?

These questions are stemming from my planned 240g build.

Thx,

It sounds like you're talking about either using a HOB overflow box, or a drilled tank with a corner box or something. I have used both, equally effectively, the deciding factor is basically whether or not your tank is drilled, or if you are willing to drill it.

I'm just curious about it all together. Me personally, I was just planning on drilling two holes up top for overflow down to the sump. Two coming back to the spray bar.
