Guppies are better options. Mollies grow far too big for the 5g at 3-4 inches. You'll need 2-3 females per male. A trio of guppies is the maximum number you can fit in your 5g.

i have to agree with lupin on this one.Mollies seem to get aggresive when in close courters at least thats what i have seen

I agree as well with the above. The Mollies would be tough, and as for Guppys I would consider Endlers ( a ver close cousin). However, in each case the issue isn't how many you add now, but how many you will have latter!

I would just get males (more color), and get 5-6 Guppies, or ~8 Endlers (Endlers are Unisex I think though)

just testing the waters so to speak. i wanted to see if i could breed some guppies. NO not as feeders but for the fun of it.

1 male per 3 females and a 20G tank, wait 4-6 weeks and you'll have a Shoot-Load! :D

In general, the adults will eat most of the young unless you have heavy-to-medium cover.

They're not called the "Millions Fish" for nothing!

Yeah. As long as you've got a male and a couple females you will have no trouble at all filling a 20G pretty quick (and a 5 gallon really quick), even with the parents eating most of the fry. All they do is breed.

I don't think you should keep either in a 5 gallon tank.

I want to gain some experience in fry care, before i move on to a different species. Seems logical to start with the most prolific breeder.

I think a 5 gal is too small if you want to try breeding, especially livebearers. Is there any way you can upgrade to a 10? A 10G will allow you to breed endlers and keep up to 20 in there. Although there are reports on endlersrus.com that you can keep up to 40 endlers in a 10G tank. Of course, you'd need large water changes weekly and all.

Endlers are like miniature guppies with a lot more color blotches :)
Personally, I prefer them over guppies.

IMHO, I wouldn't keep more than 10 endlers in a 10g, unless there were temporary fry...

definitely start with a larger tank.

Put white clouds in the 5 and get a bigger tank to use for breeding. A 10 with some naja grass or similar plant should do just fine.

If you can get a hold of one, try to get a 10g+... I have a few I'm not using, and I bet there are a few around you with some good deals as well.

No white clouds in a 5g.
