This is more of a rant then anything.

It seems like everyday I hear on the news or read a story on how a home caught on fire and the adults survived but the kids died. I can't help but to think it was planned that way. What parent would not die trying to save their kids?
It always seems to be a space heater to close to curtains or furniture. What adult isn't smart enough to keep heat from flammable things? I think its an easy way to make the murder look accidental.

I wouldn't care if I had to dive through a lava flow to save my kids from burning up, if they are going to die I am going to die trying to save them.

Sorry in advance if anyone has had children die in a fire that they couldn't save.

i just think too many people dont think...... if its cold where will the heater be? kids room or parents room? more often its the parents from what i see and its too late by the time they figure it out.......

Also, childrens' lungs are smaller. They can't take the smoke the way the adults can.

Yes, Ice I agree with you it is very sad....there is no way I would not do what I could to save my children, I do understand though some of these parents may of done everything they could, but personally I do not see how I could function or live if one of my children died, let alone if they died with out me trying to save them...when it comes to my babies I am very protective, I would do what ever it took even if it means giving my own life.

I can't imagine anyone not trying to save their kids from a burning house unless the whole thing was up in flames.

I don't think you have the whole story. I think that unless you were there and fully understand the situation you may be jumping to conclusions. I'm not saying you're wrong... I just can't imagine anyone not trying to do what they can to save their kids.

From a firefighter's perspective, 99% of the time, occupants are able to evacuate. in the case that a child needs to be rescued, the reason is often because the child, instead of being educated on proper fire escape techniques, gets frightened, and hides somewhere. now, make the air just 3 feet off the ground about 1500 degrees, and add choking toxic black smoke that can cause you to go unconscious in just one lungful. mind you, this all happens within 30 SECONDS of a fire starting in a house, depending on the location. Without proper equipment, it is virtually impossible to conduct a rescue inside a burning house, and WITH proper equipment, it's still difficult and dangerous.

Trying to rescue a 40lb child curled up in the corner of a closet, when you can't see, youre crawling on the floor, and you can barely breathe if at all, is a daunting task that is mostly underestimated. there's a reason firefighters wear all that gear, and not a single bit of it is meant for our comfort. it's there so we don't immediately DIE.

you're absolutely right, though. people (and a LOT of them) make some VERY stupid mistakes when it comes to heating devices, candles, cigarettes, overloaded electrical devices, etc. Fires kill people, there is no question about that. the key is PREVENTING them. Smokey the bear aint there to be cute and cuddly. He means business, and most people don't realize that till its their house that's up in flames.
