so i hear that snails shouldnt live in water with a lower ph (mines about 6.4) because it will screw up their shells. is that true? i wanted to get some little ones tonight

Not sure but thought I read some where that the lower PH will eat away at their shells.

Pond snails should be OK in low pH. Thick-shelled snails need more calcium, which they would probably be unable to get in low pH water.

okay, so no snails. how about an african dwarf frog? his temp req is good for my tank, but do they need a higher pH too?

You may also need to buffer the water in order to prevent erosion long term. If you notice that the snail shells are getting pitted (deeper than a shallow etching) you may need to supplement your water with either crushed coral, cuttlebone, or something like vacation feeders in order to increase its hardness.

You can also put in a cuttlebone for the snails. The little spearish shaped birds use for calcium. I have two that i put in for a week and take out to dry and put back in. The snails love it and it doesnt look to bad in the tank

My pH is low also. I added crushed shell, I make "calcium cookies", added some calcium sand and everyone's shells are actually looking better than ever.
I have 9 nerites...only remember having 8 and 1 died. 7 mystery's, tons of MTS. I'm picking up either ivory or blues tomorrow....maybe both. :D
My snails are doing so good in fact that I swear you can hear Al Green coming from the tank!
Snails rock!! :D

Great site with loads of great info!

Good luck and let us know what you got!

lmao thanks guys.

I got 3 nickel sized "Mystery Snails".. they have dark shells. I was pretty surprised to see how quick they can move(for a snail, that is.) The dwarf frogs are pretty goofy.

Theyre in a 10 gallon with 6 harlequin rasboras. The harleys like a softer pH, so Im setting up a 20 gallon planted in my room right now to transfer them to so I can really buffer up the 10 gallon tank's water. Tomorrow Im filling the 20 up and getting a hood, starting the filter, and adding some API StressZyme for the hell of it. On thursday im going to get the substrate, some moss and a few other easy growing plants to start off with along with some new water parameter test kits.

Once the tank is cycled, the harleys are going in there and ill buffer up the 10 gallon's water.

Also, I got a Betta to put in my 1.5 gallon hex(complete with sh*tty undergravel filter, 7.5 watt heater, moss and dark gravel). Once the Rasboras are out of the 10, Im putting him in there. I thought he was a pastelly-white color with a pinkish&blueish tinted tail. When I got him in the tank, he ended up being pink. Weird.
