i just bought a new tank on craigslist.
i go to pick it up tomorrow. it is about 1hr away. it is currently running and i believe it is fully "cycled".
do i need to do anything to keep the bacteria alive during transport? anthing else i should worry about?

Do you get all the equipment too (ie filter, decorations, gravel etc...)

I transfered a tank once and I was told to buy a garbage can from walmart, and pour the water into the can along with the fish. Keep the can in the bed of a truck of anythng covered, and leave the life rock in the tank. Just keep wet newspaper over and around the rock.

i would bring a bucket with you... when you get there fill it with some of the tank water... put the decoration and the bio filter in the bucket (this way you wont kill any of the bacteria)... as for the gravel if you could leave some the water in the tank... just enough to cover the gravel.... and this way you get keep the bacteria thats in the gravel too...
also before you run the filter.... make sure the water you filled the tank with is treated first... the chlorine in the water might kill off the bacteria you have... hope this helps

if there haven't been any fish in the tank or other source of food, the bacteria are most likely dead, even if there's water in the tank.

Just keep the rocks and filter media damp on the trip back and you shouldn't have any issues. It normally takes over 24-48 hours without food before you will start to lose any bacteria at all.
