Over filtration?

Hi,
I dunno what has happened to me but I just can't stop adding to my fish tank. Petco.com has Xp1 filters on sale for 79.99 right now and it is tempting me to add one to my 28 bowfront. Right now I have a Penguin 150 and a Whisper 10 on it. I did have sponge filters in it too but I have since moved them to my 10 gallon qt tank. Right now I have 40 gallons of filtration for a 28 gallon tank is that enough or should I just "be safe" :grinyes: and get the xp1 or even the xp2 to run in addition to my penguin 150 so I can move my whisper 10 to the qt tank and run it with the carbon when I am not medicating. All I have in the 28 gallon tank right now are 5 rasboras (being moved to a friends tank and might be replaced with some other community fish), 6 tiger barbs, one dwarf gourami, one catfish (forgot the name not pleco or oto), and one red tail shark. I plan on adding a german blue ram when I can find one at a LFS. If I do get the xp1 I would have 400 gph of filtration and maybe even another small sponge filter. Is that over kill? Should I just save my money and buy the xp2 when I get a saltwater setup?

WOW what's the current like in that tank?

Seems like a waste of money to me...I also get tempted to buy nice new gear, but additional filters don't reduce the need for water changes, so why bother? Sure, inadequate filtration isn't desirable, but too much current doesn't suit a lot of lake fish and fish that come from turgid or almost still river bends, as many Amazon fish do. Others will love swimming against a current - what you have would probably suit spawning salmon! LOL

I am doing a emperor and a penguin on my 29 and a emperor and a penguin and a whisper on my 55. my fish do well in it. But I did add a guppy to my 29 and he was like trying to back peddle  So I am taking out one of the filters in a week when I transport all of them to the 29.

I have an Xp2, along with a great Eheim (A bit overrated) hooked up to my 47g bowfront, the Xp2 cleared up my water in about 30 minutes - it was yellow before! (I had put in some blackwater extract a while back, and it cleaned that up almost instantly! the water is clear - the no blackwater is not bad, it just means that you have to monitor the water a little more closely for medicines. It still stays in there, just cleans it up.)

I have an XP3 and an XP2 running on my 55g tank. I could easily get away with just the XP3, but I not only wanted a backup to be running at all times if one fails (if both fail, I'm SOL) but wanted that even coverage of water flow in the tank, to prevent dead spots. I've got the spray bars facing the back glass of the tank, on a very slight angle upwards, so they create a bit of surface agitation, and the angle really helps dissipate turbulence from the water flow. I've got discus in the tank, and they really seem to like the setup I've got for them.

The current isnt bad now since I only have about 40 gallons of filtration for my 28. I am now just thinking about just up grading to a xp2 and ditching the penguin 150 (back up maybe?) the deal breaker right now is if it takes less energy to run a xp1 or xp3 instead of two hob filters (whisper 10 & penguin 150)
